Title:Dutch crowned korfball champs, but feisty Belgians keep it close
FullStory:
(KOC-CNA, Kaohsiung, July 20) For much of the World Games korfball competition, there was a sense of inevitability that the Netherlands, winner of the last four korfball World Championships, would waltz to a gold medal.

Trouncing each of its preliminary round opponents by 20 points and handling host Chinese Taipei with ease in the semifinals, the Dutch seemed invincible.

But Belgium, the only team other than the Netherlands to ever win a korfball World Championship (in 1991), refused to concede anything to the powerful Dutch in Tuesday's final.

Playing with intensity, the Belgians only trailed by three points at halftime, 13-10 and kept the possibility of a potential upset alive.

After the break, however, they missed a number of close-in chances that would have given credence to their upset bid, allowing the favorites to open a six-point lead.

The Belgians continued to battle and closed the margin to four, but the Dutch were more accurate from the field down the stretch to win the game 25-20 and capture the gold medal.

Andre Kuipers led the Netherlands with seven points while Bart Cleyman had six for Belgium.

Host Chinese Taipei thrilled the home crowd with a 25-18 win over upstart Russia earlier in the day to take bronze. It was the third korfball bronze in World Games competition for the team, the other two coming in 1997 in Lahti, Finland, and in 2001 in Akita, Japan.

Having defeated the Russians in their five previous korfball encounters, Chinese Taipei entered the match full of confidence, but the Russians took an early lead and stayed even with Chinese Taipei until late in the half.

That's when the Taiwanese shifted their defense toward Sergey Usachev, the fulcrum of Russia's offense, shifting the momentum and sparking the home team a 6-1 run to take a 15-10 lead at the break.

Russia closed to within two in the second half, but Wu Chun-hsien, who led all scorers with seven points, connected on some clutch shots down the stretch to keep the tiring visitors at bay.

Chinese Taipei head coach Hsieh Fang-yi said her team had been frustrated after a subpar performance in losing to Belgian 30-16 in the preliminary round, but their ability to regroup and grow together after that contributed to the bronze medal performance.

Now, she said, her young team will turn its attention to the 2011 korfball World Championships in China with its aims set a little higher.

In the fifth place game, the Czech Republic edged Portugal 19-18, and Great Britain beat Australia 31-18 for seventh place.

Korfball, similar to basketball but with a higher basket, no backboard and much less physical contact, is the only true mixed gender team sport, with rules laid down so that men and women have equal opportunities. Only players of the same gender are allowed to guard each other.
